The Section on the Sense-Spheres

 

Puna ca paraü, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammesu Dhammànupassã viharati,
Moreover, monks, a monk dwells contemplating (the nature of) things in (various) things,

chasu ajjhattikabàhiresu àyatanesu.
in the six internal and external sense-spheres.

Kathaÿ-ca, 02 bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammesu Dhammànupassã viharati,
And how, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating (the nature of) things in (various) things,

chasu ajjhattikabàhiresu àyatanesu?
in the six internal and external sense-spheres?

 

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cakkhuÿ-ca pajànàti, råpe ca pajànàti;
Here, monks, a monk knows the eye, and he knows forms;

yaÿ-ca tad-ubhayaü pañicca uppajjati saÿÿojanaü 03 taÿ-ca pajànàti.
and the fetter that arises dependent on the pair of them Ü that also he knows.

Yathà ca anuppannassa saÿÿojanassa uppàdo hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti;
How there is an arising of a fetter that has not arisen Ü that he knows;

yathà ca uppannassa saÿÿojanassa pahànaü hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti;
and how there is an abandonment of a fetter that has arisen Ü that also he knows;

yathà ca pahãnassa saÿÿojanassa àyatiü 04 anuppàdo hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti.
and how there is a non-arising of an abandoned fetter again in the future Ü that also he knows.

 

Sotaÿ-ca pajànàti, sadde ca pajànàti, 05
He knows the ear, and he knows sounds,

yaÿ-ca tad-ubhayaü pañicca uppajjati saÿÿojanaü taÿ-ca pajànàti.
and the fetter that arises dependent on the pair of them Ü that also he knows.

Yathà ca anuppannassa saÿÿojanassa uppàdo hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti;
How there is an arising of a fetter that has not arisen Ü that he knows;

yathà ca uppannassa saÿÿojanassa pahànaü hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti; 06
and how there is an abandonment of a fetter that has arisen Ü that also he knows;

yathà ca pahãnassa saÿÿojanassa àyatiü anuppàdo hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti.
and how there is a non-arising of an abandoned fetter again in the future Ü that also he knows.

 

Ghànaÿ-ca pajànàti, gandhe ca pajànàti,
He knows the nose, and he knows smells,

yaÿ-ca tad-ubhayaü pañicca uppajjati saÿÿojanaü taÿ-ca pajànàti.
and the fetter that arises dependent on the pair of them Ü that also he knows.

Yathà ca anuppannassa saÿÿojanassa uppàdo hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti;
How there is an arising of a fetter that has not arisen Ü that he knows;

yathà ca uppannassa saÿÿojanassa pahànaü hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti;
and how there is an abandonment of a fetter that has arisen Ü that also he knows;

yathà ca pahãnassa saÿÿojanassa àyatiü anuppàdo hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti.
and how there is a non-arising of an abandoned fetter again in the future Ü that also he knows.

 

Jivhaÿ-ca pajànàti, rase ca pajànàti,
he knows the tongue, and he knows tastes,

yaÿ-ca tad-ubhayaü pañicca uppajjati saÿÿojanaü taÿ-ca pajànàti.
and the fetter that arises dependent on the pair of them Ü that also he knows.

Yathà ca anuppannassa saÿÿojanassa uppàdo hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti;
How there is an arising of a fetter that has not arisen Ü that he knows;

yathà ca uppannassa saÿÿojanassa pahànaü hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti;
and how there is an abandonment of a fetter that has arisen Ü that also he knows;

yathà ca pahãnassa saÿÿojanassa àyatiü anuppàdo hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti.
and how there is a non-arising of an abandoned fetter again in the future Ü that also he knows.

 

Kàyaÿ-ca pajànàti, phoññhabbe 07 ca pajànàti,
He knows the body, and he knows tangibles,

yaÿ-ca tad-ubhayaü pañicca uppajjati saÿÿojanaü taÿ-ca pajànàti.
and the fetter that arises dependent on the pair of them Ü that also he knows.

Yathà ca anuppannassa saÿÿojanassa uppàdo hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti;
How there is an arising of a fetter that has not arisen Ü that he knows;

yathà ca uppannassa saÿÿojanassa pahànaü hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti;
and how there is an abandonment of a fetter that has arisen Ü that also he knows;

yathà ca pahãnassa saÿÿojanassa àyatiü anuppàdo hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti.
and how there is a non-arising of an abandoned fetter again in the future Ü that also he knows.

 

Manaÿ-ca pajànàti, dhamme ca pajànàti,
He knows the mind, and he knows thoughts,

yaÿ-ca tad-ubhayaü pañicca uppajjati saÿÿojanaü taÿ-ca pajànàti.
and the fetter that arises dependent on the pair of them Ü that also he knows.

Yathà ca anuppannassa saÿÿojanassa uppàdo hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti;
How there is an arising of a fetter that has not arisen Ü that he knows;

yathà ca uppannassa saÿÿojanassa pahànaü hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti;
and how there is an abandonment of a fetter that has arisen Ü that also he knows;

yathà ca pahãnassa saÿÿojanassa àyatiü anuppàdo hoti taÿ-ca pajànàti.
and how there is a non-arising of an abandoned fetter again in the future Ü that also he knows.

Iti ajjhattaü và dhammesu Dhammànupassã viharati,
Thus he dwells contemplating (the nature of) things in (various) things in regard to himself,

bahiddhà và dhammesu Dhammànupassã viharati,
or he dwells contemplating (the nature of) things in (various) things in regard to others,

ajjhattabahiddhà và dhammesu Dhammànupassã viharati,
or he dwells contemplating (the nature of) things in (various) things in regard to himself and in regard to others,

samudayadhammànupassã và dhammesu viharati,
or he dwells contemplating the nature of origination in things,

vayadhammànupassã và dhammesu viharati,
or he dwells contemplating the nature of dissolution in things,

samudayavayadhammànupassã và dhammesu viharati,
or he dwells contemplating the nature of origination and dissolution in things,

ßatthi dhammàû ti và panassa sati paccupaññhità 08 hoti
or else mindfulness that ßthere are these (various) thingsû is established in him

yàvad-eva ÿàõamattàya patissatimattàya,
just as far as (is necessary for) a full measure of knowledge and a full measure of mindfulness,

anissito ca viharati, na ca kiÿci loke upàdiyati.
and he dwells independent, and without being attached to anything in the world.

Evam-pi kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dhammesu Dhammànupassã viharati,
In this way, monks, a monk dwells contemplating (the nature of) things in (various) things,

chasu ajjhattikabàhiresu àyatanesu.
in the six internal and external sense-spheres.
